Google Business Profile Tips for Small Businesses

google business profiles

If you own a small business and want more local customers, your Google Business Profile could be one of the most powerful free marketing tools you have on your side.

Having an active GBP helps people find you on:

Google Search

  • Google Maps
  • “near me” searches
  • Mobile searches
  • Voice searches

The crazy part is that most small businesses barely use it properly. Some profiles are half empty, with others active but haven’t had any updates in months, if not years.

If you want a simple way to improve your local visibility, get more calls, and build trust online, this is the place to start.

What Is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile is the business listing that appears when people search for your company online.

You’ve seen them before. It’s the box that usually shows:

  • Business name
  • Reviews
  • Photos
  • Opening hours
  • Phone number
  • Directions
  • Website link
  • Questions & answers
  • Services

It’s basically your brand’s digital shop front on Google.

For many customers, this will be the first impression they get of your business, so it’s important to keep it updated.

Why It Matters So Much

If you think about modern buying habits, when people need something locally, they usually follow these steps:

  • Grab their phone
  • Search quickly
  • Compare a few businesses
  • Pick one within minutes

That means your Google profile often is the deciding point as to whether someone contacts you or your competitor.

A strong profile can really benefit a company and can help you get:

  • More calls
  • More website visits
  • More foot traffic to physical stores
  • More bookings
  • More trust

And unlike paid ads, it doesn’t cost anything to set up!

12-Step Plan For Your GBP

1. Claim and Verify Your Profile

First things first. If you haven’t claimed your Google Business Profile yet, do that immediately.

Search your business name on Google. If a listing already exists, claim ownership.

Google usually verifies businesses by:

Postcard, phone, business email or video verification

Once you are verified, you gain control over your information.

Without verification, you’re basically letting the internet guess details about your business.

Which is not ideal, especially if the details are wrong.

2. Fill Out EVERYTHING

One of the biggest mistakes I see is when businesses leave sections blank.

Google offers these sections to fill for a reason, and they love complete profiles.

And more importantly, your customers do too.

The more information you provide, the easier it is for Google to understand your business.

3. Choose the Right Business Category

Business categories matter more than most people realise.

Your main business category helps Google decide when to show your profile, so be specific.

Instead of choosing something broad like:

“Contractor”

try something niche, such as:

  • “Bathroom Remodeler”
  • “Emergency Plumber”
  • “Roofing Contractor”

Then add secondary categories if there are some that are relevant.

This will help you appear for more relevant searches.

4. Upload REAL Photos

We have become a more social and nosy society, and this means people want to see who they are dealing with.

Stock images may look nice, but they don’t build trust; real photos do.

If you’re not sure what photos to use, here are a few ideas:

  • Your storefront
  • Your team
  • Your products
  • Your workspace
  • Completed jobs
  • Happy customers (with permission)
  • Company vehicles
  • Behind-the-scenes moments

Businesses with active photo galleries often get more clicks and engagement because they feel more genuine.

5. Ask for Reviews Regularly

Reviews are HUGE for local SEO.

But waiting and hoping customers will leave one isn’t enough.

Most happy customers will simply forget. So ask them nicely. If they are happy with your service, most people are happy to jot down a few sentences for you.

Some simple ways to do this are:

  • Texting after a job
  • With an email follow-up
  • Having a QR code at checkout
  • Receipt reminder
  • Ask on your socials

Don’t expect hundreds overnight, but a few reviews each month add up massively over time.

6. Reply to Every Review

This is underrated and is important to showcase your customer service.

Replying to every review shows:

  • You care
  • You’re active
  • You value customers
  • You’re a real business

A short and simple answer goes a long way.

And yes, you need to be replying to bad reviews, too.

Just stay calm, polite and professional.

Future customers read your responses far more than you think.

7. Keep Your Opening Hours Updated

If you have a physical store, make sure your opening hours are accurate.

Nothing annoys customers faster than driving somewhere and finding the place shut.

Incorrect opening hours damage trust immediately.

Also, try to update your profile for holidays and any seasonal changes.

It takes two minutes and saves loads of frustration.

8. Use the Posts Feature

Most businesses completely ignore Google Posts, but it’s the perfect way to show your account is active. Remember if this is the first time someone is seeing your business, having important info right there could be the reason they get in touch with you.

You can post updates directly to your profile such as:

  • Special offers
  • Events
  • New products
  • Announcements
  • Tips
  • Photos
  • Seasonal updates

Think of it like a mini social media feed directly on Google.

9. Add Your Services Properly

Don’t just write:

“Plumbing”

Break your services down properly.

For example:

  • Emergency Plumbing
  • Boiler Repairs
  • Bathroom Installation
  • Leak Detection
  • Blocked Drains

This helps Google and customers better understand exactly what you offer and improves your chances of appearing for these more specific searches.

10. Answer Questions Before Customers Ask

Google profiles have a Questions & Answers section.

Use it proactively and think about common customer questions. For example:

  • “Do you offer free quotes?”
  • “Is parking available?”
  • “Do you work weekends?”
  • “Do you cover nearby towns?”

Answering these questions from the outset saves customers time and builds confidence that you’re the right people for the job.

11. Add Local Keywords Naturally

Don’t force keywords awkwardly everywhere.

Just mention your locations naturally throughout your profile.

Examples:

  • “Family-run bakery in Liverpool”
  • “Serving homes across Essex”
  • “Mobile dog groomer covering Bristol”

Make it simple, natural and clear.

12. Stay Active

Google likes active businesses.

An abandoned profile sends the wrong signals. You don’t need to spend hours on it.

Just a tweak here and there shows your active.

Simple Weekly Google Business Routine

Every Week:
✅ Upload one new photo
✅ Ask for 2–3 reviews
✅ Reply to reviews
✅ Post one update
✅ Check opening hours
✅ Update service info if needed

That’s it. Think small actions, done consistently.

A Google Business Profile is no longer optional.

For many small businesses, it IS your online presence.

And the businesses winning local customers today are usually not the biggest businesses.

They’re the ones that look trustworthy, stay active, reply quickly, share updates, collect reviews and make life easy for customers

The good news is that most of this is simple.

No fancy marketing degree needed or complicated tech skills required.

You just need a bit of time each week to stay consistent and offer a bit of helpful information.
